When you think of a party usually it is a small affair. Even if you are considering college parties like a fraternity party chances are there will be no more than a few hundred people in attendance. Well let me tell you, there is a party that happens every month on the island of Koh Phangan in Thailand that has anywhere from 10,000 to 30,000 party goers! And that is every month!
Starting from the humble roots of a dozen or so people celebrating a birthday back in the 1980’s the full moon party on Koh Phangan has taken on a life of its own.
These days the party often begins a few days before the actual full moon, but the true party begins at dusk and as the orb of the full moon begins to rise on the horizon you see tables appear on the beach, DJ’s setting up their turntables and throngs of people appearing on the beach and surrounding clubs and bars prepared to party until dawn.
As night falls the beach itself explodes with the energy of dancers as they gyrate to the tunes of their favorite DJ’s. You can find every kind of music as you travel up the beach from trance and techno to pop and reggae. In addition, there are neon lights illuminating the various party areas, fire jugglers and other entertainers to keep anyone interested and amazed.
Fireworks explode in impromptu displays and party goers wade and swim in the warm crystal clear waters of the Gulf of Thailand. If you get hungry after all the dancing you will find a huge variety of great eats from the vendors that circulate through the crowd all night long. No one goes hungry or thirsty during the Full Moon party and the motto should be “Eat, drink and be merry”.
If you have ever had the desire to see the largest and best party in the world then you owe it to yourself to grab a plane and get to Thailand where you can experience the magic of the Full Moon party on Koh Phangan. I can almost guarantee you will be blown away.
