Discover Adventures Galore in Tongariro National Park

By Sylvia Arad

The Tongariro National Park, located in the central North Island, is the oldest national park in all of New Zealand; and the fact that it sees over a million visitors a year means it's one of the most visited places in the country.

It's no wonder--the sheer number of outdoor recreational activities within the Tongariro National Park is enough to make you tired reading about, let alone actually doing them all. One of the biggest activities is hiking, or tramping as they call it here. Short hikes, long distance hikes, it doesn't matter - you can do them both.

If you have four to six days to kill, you should seriously consider the Round the Mountain Track that goes around much of the Volcanic Plateau and its Heavenly view. The Lake Rotopounamu Loop Track is just as divine, with lakes to swim in and lots of birds to look for.

Bird watching is a big pastime in the Tongariro National Park, with some 56 species to find, by the way. Spotting the local wildlife is also a big deal, so keep your eyes out for red deer and orchids, too.

Another fantastic short hike in Tongariro National Park can be done near Ohakune, which brings you out near the Mangawhero Falls. It is, however, best for only experienced hikers to tackle the Mt. Ruapehu Crater.

And who could forget about the Tongariro Alpine Crossing, a one day hiking trail that starts off along a gentle meadow and ends at Mount Doom.

I'm sorry, that would really be Mt. Ngauruhoe, the mountain used as Mt. Doom in Lord of the Rings. The view from this high up, some 1,967 to 2,287 meters above sea level, is anything but doom & gloom. Anyway, the Tongariro Alpine Crossing criss-crosses lakes and lava--which means you'll find some awesome active volcanoes.

Hiking isn't the only thing you can do in Tongariro, you can drive to see the volcanoes--along the Volcanic Loop if you're interested. Horseback riding is another way to experience the national park, as is kayaking and rafting.

When you're looking for a real adrenaline rush, consider rock climbing and mountaineering, as well as mountain biking. These, of course, are best done during the summer months; which, by the way, is the exact opposite of the Northern Hemisphere.

Skiing and snowboarding are the best winter activities during the "snow season" that runs from June to November. The Whakapapa region is the biggest ski area, with some 15 ski lifts.

Tired yet? You should be--which is probably the reason why you'll find all kinds of accommodations surrounding the Tongariro National Park, everything from budget campsites to the ultimate in luxury. What's great is these accommodations in Tongariro are located near towns where you can stock up on all sorts of ski and trekking gear.

While it might rain almost daily here in the Tongariro National Park, a few rain drops are well worth putting up with to experience these spectacular 795 square kilometers--which, for sure, are some of the most beautiful on Earth. Just don't tell Milford Sound I said that...
