Detailing Aircraft - That's Just a Plane Great Business to Be In I'd Say

Well, today, I am retired of course, but I started washing aircraft and hanging out at the airport at age 12, as I wanted to be a pilot like my dad. It was tough getting business in those days, as I was a just a skinny kid and didn't even look my age, so no one wanted me to wash their aircraft, or even touch it for that matter, but I knew what I wanted to do and persevered. Eventually, I got a few customers, and then a few more. By age 15, I was washing 135 aircraft on a "regular customer" basis and billing them monthly. It was hard work, I refused to give up.

Not long ago, I was taking a trip down memory lane while talking to a gal who has her own internet business and goes by the slogan; "self-made chick" and I got to thinking about something she told me, she said; "anytime someone tells me I can't do something, it lights a fire under my rear to go out and do it!" Yes, exactly, everyone told me I couldn't do it, and I was determined too, just to prove them all wrong, and prove myself, albeit mostly to myself.

At age 16 while building up my flight hours in trade for washing aircraft, I got my driver's license and mounted all the equipment in the back of a pickup truck. Then I was washing vehicle fleets and aircraft which increased my revenues. Back then; I called my company Aero Auto Wash, and as it grew I changed the name and started other businesses; The Car Wash Guys, Detail Guys, Truck Wash Guys, and Aircraft Guys. I know that's not all that original, "the guys" but heck when you are young and naïve, hell, what do you know about branding and marketing, you are just working your tail off, trying to make it in a great big overwhelming world.

Still, if I can do it and franchise my companies around the United States, so can you. Seriously, you can do this too. You see, as the business just kept growing - more customers at every turn - wanting reliable and quality services at a fair price. Focus, and have passion, and "damn the torpedoes" - if I had a $1,000 for every set back in those early years, I could have retired 10-years sooner. I guess the good part about being young is you are a little bit fearless, sometimes too much for your own good, but often it ends up paying off and with a little stick-to-it-ness, and perseverance, you can do it. I know you can.

Okay so, I suppose after having done all that it makes sense to share this knowledge to all those out there who seek this information. Thus, I want to compile some of my thoughts in the form of this article here. And for those who love aviation and would like to make a career of it. If start an aircraft washing business, maybe you can clean up too. Yes, it is hard work, but you know what, everything is really. There really is no easy way if you are doing it right.
